An NTI, or "nociceptive trigeminal inhibitor", is a small, custom-made dental appliance that is worn over the front teeth while sleeping. It is designed to keep the back teeth apart, which can help reduce the intensity of clenching or grinding that often occurs in people with TMJ. By minimizing the amount of pressure put on the jaw joint and muscles, an NTI can help alleviate pain and other TMJ symptoms.
2
One of the major advantages of using an NTI is that it is a non-invasive treatment option. Unlike more aggressive treatments like surgery, an NTI does not involve altering the structure of the jaw or teeth. It simply provides a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, allowing the jaw muscles to relax and recover.
3
NTI is a minimally interfering treatment option is because you do not need to wear your NTI all day. While many people only wear their NTI while they sleep, there are some who choose to wear it during the day as well, depending on their personal habits and preferences. So you may choose to wear your NTI while watching TV or cleaning, but you can take it out when at work or socializing. Additionally, because the NTI is custom-made to fit your teeth, it should feel comfortable and not cause any discomfort while you sleep.
4
The process of getting an NTI typically involves a 1-hour dental appointment, during which the dentist will take an impression of your teeth. Barsoum Dental then makes and shapes your NTI in-house so that you can take the NTI home with you the same day. Once the appliance is ready, the dentist will show you how to properly insert and remove it, and provide any necessary care instructions. From there, you simply wear the appliance while sleeping, and enjoy the benefits of reduced TMJ symptoms.
Always a pleasure to see Dr Barsoum. I thought I had a cavity but it turns out that the sensitivity was caused by night time clenching. Dr Barsoum explained how clenching causes tenderness of the tooth as well as headaches and immediately elected me for an NTI device that prevents night time clenching. Today is the first day I've got out of bed without a headache or tender jaw. Thanks!!!
